Earlier this month toy giant Mattel Inc. recalled over 18 million Chinese made toys. The toys were not recalled for poor craftsmanship but questionable manufacturing products. Mattel did initiate a voluntary toy recalls and has taken responsibility for the defects.

Many of the toys were contaminated by the use of lead based paint which could pose a very serious health risk to children if ingested. Others, like Polly Pocket dolls and Barbie play sets, have a defect involving small magnets that can be dislodged and possess a serious risk if a child were to swallow them. The Vice Commerce Minister of China, Gao Hucheng, has taken the issue to heart the issue very seriously and says that china will do all that they can to insure the quality of the toys they are producing.

"Even if there is only 1 percent of products that have quality problems, we will seek to establish the facts and take them very seriously and investigate and punish those companies involved," Gao said.

A Cabinet-level panel, as of yesterday, has launched a nationwide safety campaign. This coupled with increased safety checks being initiated throughout will hopefully have an affect on the onslaught of toy defects in the past year.
