Possible Ban on Imported Toys

In the past months about 20 million toys have been recalled. The toys were labeled as hazardous because of the use of lead based paint and small magnets that could be harmful if swallowed. The toy recalls have shocked many consumers and asked big questions about how children's toys are manufactured.

Even before the toy recalls a democrat from Florida, Senator Bill Nelson, had proposed a bill that would ban the importation of toys designed for children under five without first being certified by an independent testing group. This would act as a safeguard to protect our children from hazardous toys before they line the shelves of retail stores.

"We can sit here all day and discuss improved methods to recall these toys," Nelson said in a prepared statement. "But the most important thing we can do is make sure they don't get here in the first place."

Although the recent recalls were not really the fault of the Chinese manufacturers, other Chinese recalls of items like soybeans have caused China to bear the brunt of the blame associated with the recalls. However, this sounds like a good plan to me; we can never be too safe when it comes to the safety of our children.
