Recently the Food & Drug Administration updated their warning label of the Ortho Evra birth control patch. Recent studies showed that women using the Ortho Evra patch had a higher risk of having blood clots form in their legs or lungs than women using birth control pills.

Not only are these people suffering from blood clots but also from strokes and other blood clot linked problems. There has also been deaths involved and it is believed that they may be linked to the use of the patch as some studies have concluded. However, another study found that there was no difference in these two forms of birth control. According to the FDA's Website:

Even though the results of these two studies are conflicting the results of the second epidemiology studies support FDA's concerns regarding the potential Ortho Evra use to increase the risk of blood clots in some women.

Although, there has not been a conclusion that there is a greater risk to women, health officials are concerned about the outcome of these studies. The FDA updated the label on the Ortho Evra patch in November of 2005 stating that using the patch exposes them to 60% more estrogen than using the pill. To date, approximately 500 people have filed lawsuits or have made claims that have resulted in injuries allegedly suffered by using the Ortho Evra patch. Our firm, Reich & Binstock, have filed cases in this MDL. I am really interested to see what happens when the litigation begins. When you have young healthy girls suddenly having heart attacks, blood clots, and other medical problems you have to wonder what is going on. The only thing the women have in common is the use of the Ortho Evra Patch and that would make anyone start thinking.
