FDA Releases Warning about Antidepressant Lamictal

The FDA has released a warning regarding the antidepressant Lamictal which may cause birth defects in babies exposed during the first 3 months of pregnancy.

Lamictal, an anti-seizure drug, has become an effective tool in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Preliminary research finds that pregnant women who continue taking the drug run higher risks of giving birth to babies with cleft lips and palates. The problem lies in the fact that both conditions are serious in nature, and treatment must be continued, even during pregnancy, for the health of the woman. With this in mind, serious consideration must be put forth before one decides to have a child while on Lamictal and if one is willing to risk the health and safety of the unborn child. As always, one should consult her doctor before or after becoming pregnant, especially while on Lamictal as it is dangerous to "go cold turkey" while taking this medication.
