In February of this year Actavis issued a voluntary recall of 14 lots of their popular fentanyl transdermal painkilling patch. The patches are designed to treat chronic pain by slowly releasing extremely powerful fentanyl gel that is absorbed through the skin; however, some of the patches were found to have a defect that caused the gel to be rapidly released from the patches. This rapid intake of fentanyl can result in respiratory depression and possible fatal overdose.

Actavis has now expanded this recall to include all fentanyl patches. The company says that the recall is precautionary measure because they cannot be sure that all patches are free from defects.

Patients that suspect that they have been exposed to excessive amounts of fentanyl from a defective patch should immediately remove the patch and rinse the affected area with cool water only– NO SOAP, as it may open pores and increase the rate of absorption. Defective patches should be handled carefully and flushed down the toilet to diminish the risk of additional exposure.

Hundreds of injuries and several deaths have been linked to fentanyl overdose from the use of transdermal patches. Dozens of lawsuits have been filed regarding these injuries.

I live in katy, texas, near houston and I was prescribed the fentanyl pain patch. I believe the call numbers on the patch are 0078171135. I had the patch on for pain from auto accidents that I had in the 90's. This patch was prescribed by a pain dr. for all the chronic pain I have and I live on a disability income. All of this litigation has been resolved and none of them were my fault. In fact, I was a school bus driver for 9 years for the KISD school system without an accident. On 3/3/07, my balance was so bad that day which is unusual, I sprang my ankle at home. I went to Christus St. Catherine Hospital,-(it was on a saturday) my husband took me and when I was filling out the paperwork in the emergency room and I passed out. The doctors there thought I was overdosing. Their specific statement in the discharge summary was I was admitted with an altered mental status and hypotension due to excessive narcotic use. The only narcotics I was on was fentanyl and Norco and I had only taken 2 norco that day. I was given Narcan which brought my blood pressure up. I also had renal insufficiency with a BUN of 39 and creatinine of 2.7 at the time of admission. A Renal consult was obtained and was thought secondary to hypotension. With the IV fluids, the patient's renal function improved. Prior to discharge her BUN was 9 creatinine was 0.7 and she was urinating without any problem. I was put into the rehab section of the hospital, restrained, and put on a cathedar so I couldn't leave my bed. I was in the hospital from 3/3/07 to 3/5/07. I have medical expenses exceeding $10,000.00. I have no permanent damages, but because of the kidney failure I almost lost my life. I don't know if this patch I used is involved in the recall, however since the dr. states in his summary that I was counseled at length about abuse of narcotics which I did not do that day. I only had the patch on and took 2 norco. Thanks for your consideration.- Natalie Jackson
