Regent Sports and the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission have issued a recall for about 190,000 recreational soccer goal nets following the strangulation death of a 20-month-old child. The child was found with his neck and arm entangled in the net of the soccer goal.

The recalled products were sold under the names MacGregor Folding Soccer Goals and Mitre Folding Soccer Goals. Both of the goals have a foldable white frame and a white net that is attached by Velcro strips. The nets of both recalled models have 5” squares that pose a significant strangulation risk to young children. Nets manufactured after April 2007 have 4” squares and are not part of the recall.

The recalled goals were sold at Ace Hardware, Wal-Mart, and toy stores nationwide from May 2002 through May 2008 for $26.

Consumers that have the recalled goals should stop using the recalled nets immediately and return them to Regent Sports to receive a replacement net free of charge.
