EPA Questions Safety of Using Recycled Tires Chips in Playgrounds

In recent years it has become increasingly common to use recycled tire chips to pad the surface of playgrounds across the nation. This method is relatively cheap and provides an added cushioning for children in the event of a fall or accident.

Up to this point the Environmental Protection Agency has given an endorsement of using the material; however, internal memos recovered by the Associated Press suggest that the agency is not completely convinced of the product’s safety.

The EPA has said that there is currently no evidence that the use of the these small rubber chips or “crumb rubber” pose any threat to children, but the EPA is also saying that it is time to look at the product from a broader perspective to better evaluate any potential risks associated with crumb rubber through a study.

We can expect to the see results from the EPA’s study in the coming weeks.
